Review: Wingstop

Review: Wingstop

Wingstop is probably one of the most hyped restaurants on social media in the past few months. So, during the first week back from winter break, my spare group decided to have one extra-long spare and drive downtown to try it. Was it good? Yes. Is it overhyped? Also, yes.

Wingstop is one of those restaurants you crave at random times. Similar to the random urge to get McDonald's at 1 AM, I often yearn for the taste and crunch of Wingstop at odd hours. At that time, I picture a Wingstop location as the world's eighth wonder, but in hindsight, it’s nothing more than just a good meal that you crave ever so often. But I guess that’s part of the reason why it’s so enjoyable.

For people who haven’t heard about Wingstop, you might’ve guessed that they serve wings. With over 10 different flavours in dry and wet rubs, their wings have a diverse flavour portfolio ranging from lemon pepper to Hawaiian. Aside from wings, they also have a chicken sandwich, which I have never ever had the thought of ordering, and let’s be real, who really goes to Wingstop to order a sandwich? Last but certainly not least is their ranch, and if I had to name anything that deserves all the hype in the world, it’s Wingstop ranch. Something about it that I can’t pinpoint just makes it taste better than any other ranch I’ve had, no question.

For this meal, I ordered an 8-piece wing combo (bone-in, of course), in which I got half lemon pepper and half garlic parmesan. Additionally, I got the voodoo fries, which are pretty much Wingstop’s version of Animal Fries. The fries are served with cheese sauce, ranch, and cajun seasoning, accentuating the overall flavour by miles. Wingstop wings are always extremely crispy and have a fantastic crunch. Their lemon pepper wings are my favourite as I feel the combination of the kick from the pepper and zest from the lemon creates a refreshing but strong taste. Garlic parmesan is also good; however, they were much too salty this time for my liking. But they’re all overshadowed by the ranch. I’ll dip anything and everything in this ranch: wings, fries, and my left toe, and I’m confident it’ll taste good.

I would give Wingstop an overall FREATS rating of 8.1/10, but their ranch is absolutely addicting, which could bump their rating up a few points. We went to the Wingstop on Church, but they have various other locations around Toronto on Danforth and Bloor. I think it’s one of the better fast-food restaurants, and if you’re ever around the area, I would definitely recommend you pay a visit.
